The Mayas founded Izamal as kingdom of the Itzaes, creating a sacred city and sanctuary in the Yucatan Peninsula. The beauty of Yucatan can be seen in its multiple natural landscapes, archaeological sites and history. Admire the great Franciscan Convent of San Antonio de Padua, the most important reminder of the Spanish Conquest and domination of the New World and the initiation of the Maya to Catholicism. The convent, which has the largest atrium in Latin America, was built over an ancient Mayan pyramid. Other important archaeological structures can be viewed during a carriage tour, including the emblematic pyramid of Kinich Kak Mo, which stands out for its height and spectacular view of the city.
